#SHOOTERS_OGN Review DoitDoitleague Blog

REVIEW

SHOOTERS OGN by Brandon Jerwa, Eric Trautmann and Steve Lieber

Vertigo

Sometimes a comics isn’t just a comic. Sometimes its has something to say other times it only tries to convey a mood. this does both or neither it just is (masterful)

SHOOTERS is the closest thing I’ve read of late that put me back into the head space of being a grunt.  writers Brandon Jerwa, Eric Trautmann and the yeoman effort of Steve Lieber, tell a tale not so uncommon in today’s world of 10 year wars and gun for hire contractors. I myself am a veteran of one of these recent conflicts so SHOOTERS story and the trials of Terry Glass hit home on many levels.

The main protagonist Chief Warrant Officer Terry Glass, like many men and women I have served with went into Iraq with the best of intentions, doing there job with honor and courage so that they can get home safe to loved ones. Unfortunately war has a way of FUBARing any plans of you as soldier might have of the future. Glass experiences a tragedy sadly all to avoidable and left scarred (mentally and physically) normal is no longer a option for Chief Warrant officer Glass. We as readers take the ride along side Terry, being in effect his Battle Buddy as he recovers from his wounds. Reclaim his family life to mixed results and deal with injustice put upon him, that no one in the higher ranks acknowledge to his satisfaction.

SHOOTERS is a graphic novel that will provoke strong response one way of the other, for me it was like reuniting with an old war buddy, watching him fight back from darkness and cheering him on as he (Glass) get his life in order while seeking true justice for his men. Trautmann and Jerwa make you want what Terry wants in righting a wrong, make you see his failures as a family man while not taking sides. It’s this unabashed look at Terry I found most truthful. The art by Steve Lieber, is nothing short of dead on, vehicles, uniforms, even the adhock look of Army temporary bases with clutter and makeshift creature comforts, its sparce with simple lines when Terry is home in the states, but rough hewn lines in the field of combat. I cannot express my affection and love of SHOOTERS and to the creative team who got it right.
